I am in awe of Demna Gvasalia's couture dresses created in honour of the house of Balenciaga's 100th anniversary. Gvasalia pulled images from the house archives and recreated 9 of Cristobal Balenciaga's iconic voluminous silhouettes, adding a few updates along the way such as pockets to suit the modern woman.
Several years ago I saw the incredible 'Balenciaga: Spanish Master' exhibit in New York curated by Hamish Bowles where I had the opportunity to see see many of the original pieces that inspired these 9 dresses up close (I so regret not snapping any photos that day! There was a photo ban!) Balenciaga's bold shapes, sculpted to perfection, are among my favorite couture creations of all time. Gvasalia's homage was executed perfectly - these pieces delightfully highlight Cristobal Balenciaga's lasting influence in the world of fashion to this day.
